Defense Department Report Concludes Hegseth Put Military Personnel in Jeopardy with Signal Chat.

A long-awaited Pentagon review has concluded that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth breached departmental policies by disclosing classified intelligence in a Signal messaging chat, according to a source familiar with the report.

Details of the Event

The chat group in dispute included details about a planned air attack in Yemen targeting Houthi militants. This chat was revealed after a reporter for the Atlantic was included as a member.

Other individuals in the chat allegedly included JD Vance, CIA director John Ratcliffe, and former security advisor Mike Waltz. The investigation did not examine the actions of Hegseth, as the other participants are not employed at the Pentagon.

Signal is a commercially offered messaging app that was not approved for handling classified information.

Serious Threat to Forces

The internal investigation determined that the information shared by Hegseth was classified and posed a risk to the safety of US service members if it had been obtained by a foreign enemy force.

Notably, the report acknowledged that Hegseth possessed the authority to downgrade the information he distributed, though it was unclear whether he actually did so.

Hegseth's Reaction

The informed individual said that Hegseth declined an interview by the investigators. Instead, he provided a brief written statement.

In his response, Hegseth asserted he only shared information that would not have risked lives or jeopardized the mission. He further stated that he had the right to downgrade information and viewed the investigation to be politically motivated.

Next Steps

The completed report has been shared with lawmakers. An unclassified version is anticipated to be released later this week.
